It’s funny all this.
All the Jewish day schools I know of have put no restrictions on Harry Potter. Even those schools that would otherwise not even permit teaching internet access for fear of the children accidently coming across less “suitable” sites, actually permit their children to read these stories.
No Rabbi I know of has said anything against Harry Potter. My whole family has read all four books, me included.
I find the opposition to Harry Potter from certain Christain circles to be strange indeed. I wonder if it’s because Jewish kids (me included) know it’s pure fantasy, not so different to Enid Blyton, whereas some Christians think it’s a biography?
Anyway, I can’t wait to see the film.

And to think the entire debate currently partaken by most of the conservative fundamentalists (as in those who post Harry Potter is EVIL, Rowlings worships Satan, “Jesus died because he was weak and stupid”) on here is based on one very unreliable, misquoted hoax chain letter circling the Net in the same manner and language as your standard everyday, garden variety virus hoax.
Why is it that people don’t verify the facts when they receive a chain letter ?

Actually, it was originally a satirical piece from “The Onion”. Here’s the original for those who are interested:

While you’re there, have a look at this one. One of my favourites:

Any Christian brother or sister who takes the words of an email, sent as a chain letter quoting that Rowlings worships Satan and that “Jesus died because he was weak and stupid” ought to know that he has been taken in by your standard chain email hoax.
Here’s one of many urban legend sites describing the offending email which so many Christian brothers have taken in as GOSPEL. http://www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/potter.htm
If you choose to live in fear of Harry Potter, where is your perfect love ?

And how do you know that kids will never practice it? You assume that they make adult decisions.
The fact is, that Scripture teaches us to separate ourselves from such things.
And btw, witchcraft is quite real.
