(…what a good first book for this man!)
In reading, many of us so often stay with familiar topics…comfortable topics…topics concerning our own beliefs, work or hobbies. We don’t venture much beyond that.
Challenged from several directions last year to expand my reading beyond the usual Christian books and books on various areas of leadership, I hung out with a couple of novels. What a novel idea!! (…sorry!)
On the prowl for a GOOD novel (boy, both secular and Christian there is a lot of fluff out there in this genre) I kept reading great reviews about a “first time” novel by a man from Minnesota. I didn’t know if the amazement about this excellent book was because the author had not published before…or because he was from Minnesota. But what caught my eye was all accounts of how his man used the English language with such power and creativity.
I bit. I bought. I could hardly put it down. I found myself rereading sentences and paragraphs, fully caught up in the exceptional craft of great writing…and a most engaging story. He does one chapter on heaven that makes me think he’s been there…and makes me long for the place even more.
Next time you are by your local book store, stop and thumb through a copy…tuck it under your arm…pay up…go home…settle down in your favorite spot to read…and enjoy. This is one time when I say I know you will enjoy a good story.
Publisher’s Weekly (which is not necessarily known for the kindest of commentary on a new work) said the following about this novel…
“This is a stunning debut novel, one that sneaks up on you like a whisper and warms you like a quilt in a North Dakota winter, a novel about faith, miracles and family that is, ultimately miraculous.”
Well, good friends, that is it for the moment on suggestions for your Christmas money. There are some other books…and some splendid CD’s to tell you about…but that’s for another moment in time. If curiosity get’s
the best of you…holler…and I can let you know. 🙂
May He Who gave you your first breath keep you breathing deep of His great and consistent love for you. There is some unusual anticipation in my soul about 2002…and I hope in yours.
…most thankful to be on the planet with you!
