Arise,then,women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts,
Whether our baptism be of water or of tears!
say firmly:
‘We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We,the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs…

Julia Ward Howe (Poet. Better known as the writer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic)
With war and nationalism,Mother’s day is yet another case study of the seduction of the church, by the ‘principalities and powers’.
Julia Ward Howe, one of the women behind the original mothers day, angered with the brutality and
carnage of war, penned the “Mother’s Day Proclamation”. The early days of MD were about the radical drive by women for peace and for justice.
Australians on MD 2009 were again, diverted, distracted and seduced. Nothing of
*the daily carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan
*the 52 women and sons and daughters of mothers dying each week as a result of work
*kids and mothers locked up in Gaza,or,
*the 27 million slaves;
but, in concert with the churches, which turned on special services,(always a good time for the men –
priests, pastors and bishops,to allow women to run the services!), Australian Christians
joined with the rest of the community in spending:

joined with the rest of the community in spending:
*$50 million on cards (Hallmark male directors love the Day!)
*$35 million on chocolate
*$95 million on cosmetics (animals on which these are tested, are not so enthusiastic)
*$29 million on clothes (no flowers for kids and women in Bangladesh/China/Cambodia)
*$170 million on flowers(MD accounts for 25% of the florist industry’s revenue)

Women’s Lives” (Info, readings, stories), and share them with your family:eg. Every 60 seconds somewhere in the world a mother dies from pregnancy complications; 530,000/day;  so as we sit for the hour in church next Sunday, 60 girls and women will die.
